A Few Cat Facts for Cat Owners

by Kathrynn Kelley

When we watch movies, or any media with cats in them, the cats are always shown to be temperamental, and moody. Nothing could be further from the truth. Cats are similar to any other animal. What we need to know before we become cat owners is what type of behavior to expect.

When a person first gets a cat they assume it is going to be loving, affectionate, and cute all the time. Only to be surprised when their little puff-ball turns out to be independent, and kind of a loner. Leading them to give up the poor little kitty. Where if they would have done a little research before getting or giving up poor kitty this all could have been avoided. People assume cats are like dogs and cats are very different from dogs.

Being distant relatives to the much larger cats we see in the wild, (of course our kitty is much smaller), they are able to eat at frequent intervals. COnsuming anywhere from 10 grams to a quarter of a cup at a time. The reason for this is that it is instinctual to keep their digestive system in optimal condition. In addition to eating frequently these instinctual creature just like their relatives can go a day to two without eating anything, and as long as they don't seem to be sick this is a very normal behavior.

Would you believe that a cat sleeps more than half their life away. They require anywhere from 13 hours to 18 hours of sleep a day. The number of hours depends on the stage of life your cats in. Kittens and elderly cats will sleep more than mid-aged cats will. Being independent creatures, cats are not usually cuddly sleepers. Most likely they will find a dark cove to take their catnap. Like when they sleep under the bed.

Cats are a clean creature and like to keep things private. They like their litter boxes to be hidden in a private place. In fact after a cat uses the litter box they bury it in litter covering up and hiding their business. This behavior is a learned behavior that they pick up from their mothers at a very young age.

These are just a few cat behaviors cat owners should know. Now, that you know these behaviors it is easier to know when a cat is being normal and when a cat is acting odd. If they start acting really strange like if they stop using their litter box and instead go in different parts of the house, this could be a sign of illness and should be taken to a vet immediately to rule out any illnesses.

Remember! Any time your cat is acting out it's better to fix the problem when it arrives than waiting until the problem as gotten out of control.
