What You Should Know: Before Training Your Cat
Cats, just as dogs, are great animals to have as pets. They don't take too much handling, and you can entertain them with some of the simplest things. Cats are a perfect animal to have in the household. There is nothing better than buying a new pet kitten and being able to watch it grow up to a cat that lives for years and years. However, once the kitten grows up, many people decide that they want to train their cat to be able to do certain things. Some of these are simple, like using a litter-box or using the bathroom outside, while some people want to train their cat to use the toilet or do crazy tricks.
No matter what you are training your cat to do, you have to know a few things before you can start training your pet. In the wild, before cats were domesticated, they were usually solitary and extremely territorial. Cats are also known to be stubborn and sometimes arrogant. Usually, cats are proud and don't listen well to others. Because of this, training your cat might be a little bit harder than it would be to train a dog.
Though cats can be stubborn just like we can be stubborn at times, it helps greatly if you start a routine training program as soon as possible. Don't wait until your cat is so far out of control that you feel hopeless. Plus, cats are creatures of habit and if you wait until their behavior becomes a habit, it can be that much harder to convince them that your way is the better way.
While it's best to start training quickly and as early as possible. When you first bring home your feline friend give them a few days to settle in. Of course always provide a litter box for them to use and make it accessible. However, the other types of training can wait a few days to let them distress from jumping into a new environment. This way they will be ready and responsive to your training tactics. Giving you and your beloved kitty a great start to a lasting relationship.
Think of it this way if you don't start early it would be like jumping into your child's life when they are 8 yrs old asking them to unlearn everything they've become accustomed to doing. That would be hard for them and waiting to train kitty is hard for your cat too.
The most important thing about training your cat is timing and knowing your cat. First, you don't want to train your cat years after you've had it. Start early, that was bad behaviors don't become habits. Also, know that you can't spend hours a day training your cat. Trust me, it will get very boring for the cat and yourself, which makes training that much more frustrating.
It is also important that you get to know your cat. Understand your cat's personality. Besides understanding personality, you have to realize the instinctual behaviors of all cats. Remember, never scream at or scold your cat if it does something wrong. This makes training an unpleasant time for both of you.
