A Guide to Buying Baby Strollers

by Chiun Masters

Baby strollers help out a lot of parents in taking care of their baby, but be careful when buying one, because if you make the wrong choice, you could end up with a lot of trouble and inconvenience. How can parents choose the right baby stroller? Well, you have to realize that different strollers are available for just about any kind of lifestyle. To help you pick one, first consider the main purpose for buying one, and then look for a stroller model that best fits your life and your baby.

As always, your baby's safety is the biggest concern here. Check strollers for stability before buying, and don't forget to see if the stroller will remain upright with a diaper bag hanging over the handles. Also examine the stroller harness. A five-point harness is best, especially for infants or babies who are in the stroller a lot. For occasional mall trips, a three-point harness will be fine.

When you find a stroller that seems right, travel around with it through the store before making a decision. Choose a stroller that makes corners smoothly, and make sure that your feet don't hit the wheels when walking. This would come in handy when you have to hurry or maneuver in crowded areas. Check the height of the handles to be sure they are comfortable for you. If you're tall, getting one with adjustable handle heights will be great for your posture. If you want more comfort, look for foam-covered handles.

Also think about the other features you may need from a stroller. Would you want a basket underneath it to carry the diaper bag? Or perhaps you'd like a stroller with organization trays, toy bars, snack and drink holders, rain hoods and more. You can get these separately, so fret not if you cannot find any beverage holder in your favorite stroller. Another important thing to consider is how easily you can fold and store it away when not in use.

There are around four common types of strollers available in the market. There are the lightweight strollers, weighing just under 20 lbs. but loaded with such features as storage baskets, reclining seats, and sun shades. These would be excellent for taking your baby on short trips. Standard strollers often feature roomier seats, larger wheels, more storage space and extras like built-in music systems. These would be great for almost anything, and many parents love these versatile wonders.

If you want to take your baby out while jogging, there are also jogging strollers available. Some parent buy one as a backup for a standard stroller or even as an everyday stroller. Jogging strollers have sturdier wheels, brakes on the handles, and all-terrain suspension systems, which make them ideal for almost any surface. They are not recommended for babies under 6 months old, though. Travel systems offer convenience for busy new parents. A travel system begins with a standard stroller, but includes an infant car seat that snaps onto the stroller. When the infant car seat is outgrown by the baby, you can use the travel system as a standard stroller.
