Over the years, koi pond filters have changed dramatically. When you are looking for the best koi pond filter, there are a number of things to keep in mind. As may be expected, you will need a filter that is large enough to accommodate the depth of the pond, as well as is overall area. In most cases, you will also benefit from comparing pump ratios in order to find one that will recycle the water as quickly as possible. You can also review some of the information found in Koi Fish Ponds Made Easy for additional insights.
For the most part, koi pond filters are designed to be safe for your fish. That said, if they are small or weak, you may find that they get sucked into the filter inlets. If you notice that the fishes have a hard time swimming around the filter, you may need to see if you can lower the pumping ratio. Therefore, it will be to your advantage to choose a filter hat will enable you to adjust the cycling rate. Typically, once the fish get older or stronger, you can increase the filtering rate.
When you are shopping for a koi pond filter, you will also want to give some thought to any special materials you might want to put in the filter. For example, most filter cartridges will not include zeolite crystals. Unfortunately, even if they include charcoal and zeolite together, there is often not enough zeolite to manage ammonia. This is especially important to consider if your pond is in a sunny area, or you are treating the pond for algae blooms. At the very least, if you can add more zeolite to the filter, ammonia will cycle into nitrates faster, and make the water safer for the fish. In addition, you may also find that you will need to replace ether zeolites or charcoal faster than what is normally recommended.
