Even though koi live outdoors in a pond, you will still need to make sure that their environment is safe and healthy.  While koi care has some elements that are similar to tropical fish care, you will also find a number of places where you will need to learn some new skills.  That said, if you love taking care of fish, you should not miss an opportunity to have your own koi pond.

If you have tropical or freshwater fish, you are probably in the habit of checking for damage to gill covers, fins, and scales.  Fortunately, if your aquarium is kept clean, you will not need to worry about parasites such as flukes and worms.  On the other hand, an outdoor pond can easily attract a number of parasites that will attack your fish.  Therefore, if you want to practice good koi care, you will need to recognize these infestations, as well as make sure you know how to treat them.  Chances are, if you read Koi Fish Ponds Made Easy, you will get some ideas about which infections tend to be the most common.

As you may be aware, koi care will always encompass managing an environment that supports all kinds of other animals.  This may include cats, raccoons, rats, and even snakes that will enter the pond and eat the fish.  Unfortunately, even if you buy a pond cover, it may not be enough to prevent a determined predator from getting into the pond.  Typically, you will need to make use of some kind of fence, or some other method to keep your fish as safe as possible.  While this may take some time to learn, you will always enjoy being able greet your finned friends when it is time to feed them each morning.
