Using Gardeners Grow Lights

Using gardeners grow lights can be a good way to keep plants growing over the long dark winter, or start your new plants from seed.
Plants need light for photosynthesis, the manner in which they feed themselves. In the dark bleak days of winter, there simply is not enough daylight to support the growth of seeds and other sun loving plants. Luckily you can use modern technology to satisfy the gardener in you and grow your plants indoors until the sunny days of spring arrive.

Gardeners grow lights come in different sizes, colors and intensitys so you will have to pick the one that suits your needs. They can easily plug into any electrical outlet in your house. Some people set up rows of large lights over tables in the basement where they have their seedlings growing. You can use reflectors to direct the light better, but be careful about putting the lights too close to your plants as these lights are hot and can burn the tender new seedlings.

In order to support photosynthesis, gardeners grow lights, emit blue light that plants thrive on. The spectrum of light produced is different from regular household lights and also produces more lumens. These metal halide lamps produce a light that is pretty close to sunlight with the advantage of giving you control of how long your artificial sun is shining on your plants.

Gardeners grow lights come in different sizes, so you'll need to pick the one that is right for your indoor garden. If your have a large garden of 8 feet square, you will need a 1500 watt lamp, a medium garden of 3 sq. feet needs 250 watts and a small 1 ½ foot square patch will need only 50 watts.

When using gardeners grow lights, be sure to read the directions on your seed packet or for your plant. Your primary concern is how long the light should be shining. Some seeds won't like direct light at first so you may want to filter the light by putting them in a plastic tent of some sort. Make things easy on yourself and get an electric timer that automatically turns the light on and off during the desired intervals.
