How To Plant Daffodils

Learning how to plant daffodils is easy! These fabulous flowers are well known to be a first sign of spring here in New Hampshire and a welcome sight they are.
There are tons of different colors and varieties of daffodils - each with different bloom times so it pays to do a bit of research before planting so you get exactly the type you want. It's also a good idea to know the size of the area where they will be planted so that you can figure out how many to buy.

When buying bulbs, you really do get what you pay for. If you want beautiful daffodils, then you need to plant beautiful bulbs. A scraggly bulb will produce a scraggly plant, so look for bulbs that are large and plump with 3 or more points - places where growth will spring from.

The big question in planting daffodil bulbs is not really how but where. Daffodils like bright sun, so they grow best in an area that is sunny all day. Well drained soil will help too. These flowers look best when growing in a group, so make sure you have room to plant several bulbs for maximum effect.

Before planting your bulbs, mix the soil with compost or other organic matter. Sometimes it is easier to dig a trench for your bulbs instead of making individual holes – especially if you are planting a lot of flowers. Dig down about 5" deep (the general rule is to plant down about 3 times the height of the bulb). Daffodil bulbs should be placed 3" apart.

Make sure that you have some fertilizer specially made for bulbs before you start the project and mix this in with the soil at the bottom of the holes that you have dug.. Put the daffodil bulb with the roots down and pointed side up. Cover with soil, pat and water thoroughly. Now you can enjoy the winter knowing that your daffodil bulbs will give you a bright display in the spring!
